Maybe everyone's heard the news by now. After all this time, it's finally official. What do you think??
SMRPG was always my far-and-away favorite Mario title since I was a kid. As it's been some years since my last playthrough I'm definitely thinking of going through both original and remake before the year is up. Also hoping this whole remake push gets the original in front of more eyes re: Nintendo Online.
Some immediate thoughts-- I am really, really looking forward to the new takes on the OST, probably more-so than the actual gameplay, lol. (The opening demo sequence was the very first VGM I attempted to arrange on my own.)
ALSO, I've been following Huckori's fan remake for a while (https://www.finnsylwester.com/smrpghd / https://twitter.com/huckori) and it's kind of wild to compare theirs with the official. Might just be me, but I think the homebrew is much more visually interesting, at least for now.

I strongly prefer Huckori's take. But I'm glad it's getting remade. A childhood favorite!

Yeah! Where Nintendo proper has to maintain its visuals within a certain modern mold, Huckori gets to differentiate and re-interpret as desired. Give that rat some gnarly skin folds or that kong some stop-motion texture? You got it!
It's a little odd how in the email blasts Nintendo is sending out re: the Direct, there's no mention of the game? Wondering still just what the Square Enix partnership/level of control there is with it all.

Thought I'd share this informative blog post about some of the localization decisions surrounding the game: https://www.thrillingtalesofoldvideogam ... rpg-remake (also just a good blog in general)
And I did finally get a chance to play it. Adventured up to just before Booster's Tower aaaaaaand I think I might be good, haha. There are some nice quality of life changes and all. But it marionettes along so closely with the original, for me it only serves to show how odd/janky of a fit the move to 3D is for its particular 2D base. There's also the great option of being able to select between updated soundtrack and original on the fly, and I found myself switching back and forth.... and ending up on the original simplified soundscape more often than not. Updated tunes are a bit ...top-heavy? Original is direct, distinct. As it has to be. Along with everything in a 16-bit environment; making the most of its limitations, leaning into them. I found myself wishing Nintendo had just built something wholly new out of this, like how Square-Enix is just shooting their shot on those FFVII tangents.
