Now Playing - Video Games

So, whatcha been playing?

Here's a thread for quick thoughts about what you've been getting into at the moment!

What do you like about it? What don't you like? Are you gonna keep plying? Would you recommend others to pick it up and check it out?

If you've got a lot to say about a particular game, or there's a lot of discussion about it, consider making a dedicated thread instead of posting in here.

For some reason, Caesar 3 popped into my head this weekend.

I used to play the shit out of this as a kid, alongside Civ 2. I haven't played it in a long time, and I got a sudden itch for a comfy city building sim game.

It was only $5 on gog at the moment, and I installed a fan mod called Augustus which adds some modern QOL stuff and some game improvements.

I played through the first few stages and had a blast. Not sure if I'll continue much beyond this weekend, but it was a good time.

Anyone into Caesar or other similar walker/city sims? I'd love to try a modern version of something like this, with a focus on city efficiency, rather than military or combat. I thought about trying Kingdoms Reborn but I'm not sure.

Whoa, haven't thought about that one in a long time. I'm thinking we were into that one, its Egyptian counterpart Pharaoh, Knights and Merchants, and one of The Settlers titles around the same timeframe. I love that modern mods exist for older titles, I need to remember that when I revisit them.

As for what I'm playing now, I'm still putzing about Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom. Ha, all this time and I'm only now starting to progress main storyline stuff.

Discovered my local libraries have video game collections (gasp!) so I have that TMNT "Cowabunga Collection" and Bowser's Fury waiting next.

That Caeser 3 UI is incredible. Dedicating the bottom right corner to those carvings is amazing, does that area change ever?

Totk for me! It's holding my interest for much longer than Botw.

Andrew, how is Road Redemption??

I've been dipping in and out of various PS1 and 3DS games. Recently beat Box Boy, which was great. Currently a couple dungeons into A Link Between Worlds and am really enjoying it.

I just finished God of War: Ragnarok, which was fantastic. And now I've moved on to Final Fantasy XVI, which I already have about 28 hours into. So far, it's been amazing, with these Eikon battles being the FF equivalent to kaiju fights, which I am just loving.

Road Redemption is, uh, hmm. I mean, it's not strictly _good_. It's very low budget, unpolished, janky, and kinda broken. Framerate on the switch is all over the place. It's got a ton of problems. And I can't put it down. It's just modern Road Rash with a deeper emphasis on combat, and some fascinating ideas for longer term progression. I can't stop playing it lol. When it clicks, it CLICKS. Then I looked up the main developer on twitter and he was following a bunch of right wing turbo-dirtbag politicians so I can't really recommend buying it in good conscience.

Played a little 3D World Runner with the Squaresoft 3D glasses last night. Also played some Pushmo lol.

^ WITH the glasses! Holy smokes, that game fascinated as a kid, never had a chance to try the 3D mode proper.

I just finished the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4 and god damn Capcom stays winning. Both were fantastic experiences.

Been putting hours into Hunt Showdown as they just dropped a big content update.

Also been playing some Wii Fit U for the novelty. It's actually a lot of fun and pairing it with the pedometer makes me want to take longer walks :)

I've owned the Resident Evil 2 remake for so long and never played it. Maybe I'll start that after Zelda and play it in the lead-up to Halloween.

I've always been interested in Hunt Showdown but from the outside it seems like a bit of a commitment to learn - similar to Rainbow Six Siege. Would it be a rough time for new players to jump in now?

A friend and I were looking for a multiplayer game on the PS5, and we started playing Dead by Daylight, and you know what? This is actually pretty fun! The gameplay takes a mechanic that I've enjoyed for a while (I loved Evolve), and uses it in a very simple, but wildly fun way. I recommend giving it a shot!

I'm finally playing Deltarune Chapter 2, which has been pretty good! I'm impressed with how it and the first chapter manage to individually compressed the typical 20+ hour sprawling RPG even further than Undertale.
Debating what to play next, but probably Vagrant Story.

I actually think that it's a better time than ever for new folks to get into Hunt. They've just dropped a vastly improved tutorial experience as well as a shooting range so new players can get acclimated with the game loop and feel and try out all the weapons.

That being said since it's a multiplayer game it's a lot more fun if you have one or two pardners to run with.

Also it comes with all the perils of being a live service game of course.
