Famicom Gaijin: The NES Thread

I grew up with ready access to an NES, so I've taken that library for granted most of my life. I've played a whole lot of NES over the years. But I feel like it went under the radar for a fair few years, like youtubers had mined all the content they possibly could out of it and moved on to other things or something. But given one Mr. Gerstmann's ongoing quest to rank the platform's entire catalogue, coupled with long-running projects things like Jeremy Parish's ongoing NESWORKS expanding production values and the ever-present Chrontendo, among others (etc. etc.) . . . I mean look, I won't say the NES is having "a moment". Charlie Brown simply did not have hoes. But I've been thinking about it a lot again lately. Probably goes without saying that the biggest reason for me thinking about the NES again in new ways is the unstoppable might of our very own @HPRshredder.

But heck, man. I've been going around and filling in some of the more glaring gaps in my NES collection lately and spending a lot of time with these games and it's just been delightful.

This week I got:
- Wizardry II
- River City Ransom
- Xexyz
- Street Fighter 2010
- Super Dodge Ball
- Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Anyone around here play some NES games lately or WHAT

YOU KNOW WHAT I was *just* thinking about the old TV corner this week and it's current lack of connected consoles... and of correcting that situation including the ol' NES... and maybe popping in Air Fortress and attempting to finally beat the sucker for the very first time, a small goal which has eluded me for at least 30 years.

Well, I went and did the dang thing. Took my cleanest NES, took it apart, gave it a proper once-over and cleaned the heck out of it. Now everything works first try, this is wild.

^ shiny and new! Lol I'm always so scared to try that kind of cleaning or take-down-- only ever have one of something and I worry of inadvertant destruction

I've been playing a little Ultimate NES Remix on the 2DS. What a great concept! Also dipped into Metal Storm via emulator a few days ago. Need to spend more time with the NES.

Nice! I always liked that idea, I only played it on Wii U though and the Wii U's NES emulator makes me deeply, profoundly sad. They should do it on the Switch, dagnabbit.

Metal Storm rules! There's an updated ROM that came with that retro-bit re-release a few years back that has some really cool quality of life improvements that make it feel much more, uh, even-handed? Worth tracking down!

So weathered and worn. I may have to join @andrewelmore in popping the top and cleaning up. Couldn't get a stable run, or without visual glitches. :(

Dude, I wish I had one of those. They look so sick. Are the belts more robust in them or do they wear down at roughly the same rate?

I don't know about rate or anything, but I know they've all long since turned to Goop and need replacements.
