Famiclub DISCover

This is Famiclub DISCover - an all new jam about designing the disc art of a fictional video game or software.

Image from Gamedisc Beauty

Check out Gamedisc Beauty and AD/Compact_Disk to bask in some wonderful disc art before diving in.

This is an open-ended, no commitment, no deadline, non-competitive design jam. Feel free to post your entry this week, next month, or next year!

Here's how to get involved:
  • Name your disc! Anything you like! If you need some suggestions, check out this Video Game Name Generator
  • Download @malyzar's excellent DISCover art photoshop template from Google Drive here. It's got a ton of toggleable logos and customisation options to get you started.
  • Post your entry (or entries!) in this thread and tell us a bit about your game or software and the design decisions you made along the way.
Additionally (or alternatively), use this thread to post amazing disc art that you find along the way, or if you have any favourites!

Can't wait to see what you all come up with!

---

Finally, a huge special thanks to @malyzar for creating the DISCover jam concept and creating the amazing template linked above!

To kick things off, here's a PS2 version of my Famicase entry for this year! This isn't my official DISCover entry, just a fun supplemental/alternate piece that seems appropriate for the jam. More later, hopefully!

hey all! this is such a cool idea, i got linked this by a friend and wanted to make something for it! had this idea for a while and thought it'd work well here...

introducing Earthlifve! your run-of-the-mill, archetypical full-scale recreation of life on earth in virtual reality, with absolutely nothing insidious going on behind the scenes!

this idea has taken many forms over the years (i actually used to draw fake game discs for this concept when i was about 16-17 years old in high school). this feels like the best realisation of it yet. sort of deals with the theme of the very relatable but ultimately kinda-unhealthy desire to live in an idealised, romanticised version of our world: a perfect sim-earth, without harm or conflict (but suspiciously with all the same systems of power, hmmmmm).

it's ultimately a corny sci-fi concept, and this 'game disc' is actually the entire online-connected simulation (advanced technology disguised as more archaic technology). Eyeria is a games console/brain computer interface (which is totally not evil) which i created fictional packaging for a while back, and it seemed perfect to use here. and Tactiwerks is the developer company behind the game (and also the name i use for my design stuff).

aesthetically this disc art is inspired by minimalistic and quirky cover art for 90s-2000s games and media i've absorbed over the years but could not place or name for the life of me. also i love modern use of glyphic allcaps typefaces.

hope you all like it!

Hey, this is great! You've nailed the vibe. Great concept and great execution. Thanks for joining and sharing!

If you're looking to name a particular aesthetic, I'd recommend checking out the aesthetic categories on CARI! Has a slight Gen-X Soft Club feel (which is my favorite aesthetic). And the icon is maybe a little Factory Pomo. Dig it!

This is the first thread that really grabbed my attention to Famiclub. I'm eager to join in at a later point. 👀

In the meanwhile, here are some resources regarding Nintendo GameCube templates to kickstart some "mini disc" (and other platforms' discs) type designs as well:

Xeno Crisis' Nintendo GameCube disc mock ups on their product page (Xeno Crisis is a SEGA Mega Drive game that got a lot of ports to other platforms including GameCube. Their product page got mock ups of their Japanese, North American and PAL GCN based discs.)

Noah/@cheeerslads on Twitter put up a nice Nintendo GameCube template as Twitter images, and a .psd/.ai file through MediaFire.

---

LaunchBox' Games Database has scanned disc/label art of GameCube but also plenty of other games (3DO, Dreamcast, non-dsic platforms etc.)

Oh gosh I forgot about Bitmap Bureau managing to get GCN discs printed, that's bananas. Xeno Crisis is cool! I mostly play it on Mega Drive with a six-button controller because that's _kinda_ like playing Smash TV on SNES with the face buttons aiming your shots? Takes some getting used to, haha. I like the other ports I've played (NEO-GEO, Dreamcast, Xbox, PC), but I always return to the Mega Drive version by default. I really admire their commitment to shipping that game on every platform they possibly can, it's impressive!

hey, thank you so much! i'm so glad you think i nailed it, that means a ton to hear! i forgot to say earlier, but i loved your design too! the typography on the word manniq, the wireframe in the bg, it's all lovely. and i really appreciated how you had it layered and blended to look like negative space in the silk screen print itself, revealing the disc! so cool..

and i totally forgot about cari, but you're right! and yess, i always loved gen x soft club, any of the softer, more homely aesthetics from that 90s-2000s crossover period are huge inspirations for me. and the icon is totally a lil bit factory pomo, i never made that connection! just needs a gear, haha

but yeah, might end up using elements of all this in an album cover or the back of some album art. all of this got me thinking about the recent artwork for vegyn by isha d. pika (the singles in particular).

FEVER PITCH.
"Swallowed whole by the kingdom your life has been macabre tour of the crowns justice. Till the day the Blood Fever returned, now a grim hope leads out form the belly of the beast. Are you strong enough to walk it?"

Fight though the dungeons, halls and, streets of Umbral domain with DRPG action, can you free your self in three day or will the Blood Fever consume you.

Misc things that happened.
  • This one was the best out of the three idea I sketched out.
  • Due to my dnd days I have a fondness of Dungeons RPG.
  • I current don't have photoshop and I lost a lot time trying to work out I way to use malyzar's template, but it turn out you can just drag and drop the .psd into clip studio.
