Cohost shutting down

I'm sure everyone's heard the news and seen all The End postings going on. Just like to say again I'm very glad tiny corners like this one exist, even if I'm mostly lurking about.

What's very gratifying to see in all the "Find me here" posts is a real growing emphasis on personal websites, RSS, occasional forums, or just direct messaging via discord, telegram and the like. More so than with previous site exodus moments, it really does feel like there's been that shift in recent years. Hell, it's re-energized my own desire to get back to having a personal website (which I havent stopped thinking about for months now, and this really do feel like a pants-kicking moment)

Hell yeah. I'm pretty bummed, but also energized. Came here to make a similar post. Gonna try to be a bit more active. This sort of thing is what I actually want out of the internet.

Yoooo. Yeah, huge bummer, but inevitable and refreshing in a way. It's also prompted me to update and improve my own website in a way I haven't in months.

I'm also all for personal websites and taking control of online spaces into our own hands.

but

I also really like a place where I can just read natural discussions, jokes, and art about a variety of different subjects that I may not have come across otherwise. I like that these broader online spaces can create a place where I can randomly discover a new artist and leave a comment, or just read some random people's discussion about what's the best app to use for some specific circumstance.

Some of these things can be solved if everyone made their own site with RSS, but to me it would be missing a little aspect where like I can reply to malyzar's comment on breakfastcowl's post about something, which is harder to do with personal blogs.

The internet is obviously in a very strange place at the moment. I feel like the ~federation~ space is pointing slightly in the right direction for the future of "social networks", but still has a long way to go.

Anyway, I hope that Cohost can spark something in some other devs around the world to try to make something Good.

Eggbug will live on.

Speaking of @_@ https://cohost.org/cainoct/post/7660971 ... f-the-coho

Very true what you say about being a part of that social flow in a shared space. Someone was posting about the blogging era and I'd kind of blotted out how bad the comments situation had been with being utterly overrun with spam and the difficulty for any one individual to moderate their space. Social media did make some kind of appealing answer to that early on.

Ha, but all those corporate proclamations about "Join the conversation!" with the big platforms just becoming noise and audience/consumer/endless-scrolling/endless-antagonism and very few places like Cohost where a casual back-&-forth and pleasant one-on-one discovery actually seemed to mean something

Three days late to the party and I am very sad. I mean when you read the financial reports you know this was coming but still what @Fruitality (nice banner btw) pointed out the very small stream with a bunch of random stuff you knew was kinda cool but maybe didn't know before. I mean, I made a comic because I saw that it was #make a terrible comic day 2024 https://cohost.org/kaiswerk/tagged/make ... day%202024 (if you want to see this after 2024 dm me?) and I had an afternoon to spare. I will deeply miss it even though its shortcomings.

Thanks for this space and you all (!) even though I must admit I am always very lurking even on "easy" socials like cohost where I just reblog cool stuff most of the time.

I also wanted to add that since like a half year I became more active in my local art scene here in Hamburg and not that it is anything major but it really lifts my whole spirit up when I sit with 3-20 people and make comics each two weeks for two hours :D

Yeah, I'm gonna miss that website dearly. It's hard to find anything to say that I haven't already said everywhere else by now, but man . . .
